To “a Goldwater lady from Indiana” who wrote him to complain of press bias against her man, Reston replied in his column, “We simply read what Barry and his spokesman say, and then pass on the results. Or we compare what the Senator says one day with what he or his aides say on another, and the thing comes out anti-Goldwater almost every time.” For all the noble sentiments he invoked, Goldwater’s wildly illogical combinations could not be ignored.

In the same speech, the Senator calls for more military strength, and “a slowdown in the expansion in Federal spending,” and the end of the military draft—all within a few paragraphs of one another!

In one paragraph he condemns the Democrats for suggesting his policies might lead to war, and a few minutes later condemns the Democrats for drifting “closer to war on an ebbing tide of military strength.”*
